Denise Sevick Bortree, Ph.D., associate professor of communication and director of the Arthur W. Page Center, teaches in the department of advertising and public relations at Penn State University. Her research focuses on ethical dimensions of communication in a number of contexts including nonprofit organizations and environmental responsibility.  She has authored more than twenty peer-reviewed journal articles, which have been published in journals such as Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journal of Public Relations Research, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, Public Relations Review, Journal of Children and Media, International Journal of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Marketing, among others.  In addition, she is the co-editor of two books Talking Green: Exploring Contemporary Issues in Environmental Communication and Ethical Practice of Social Media in Public Relations. She has consulted for the United Nations on the State of the World’s Volunteerism study, published in Dec 2011.  Bortree’s research has been recognized with the 2007 and 2008 Mary Merrill Memorial Award from the International Journal of Volunteer Administration as well as three top paper awards from the public relations division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Conference (AEJMC).She sits on the executive board for the nonprofit section of the Public Relations Society of America. Bortree earned a master’s degree in mass communication, a master’s in education, and a Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of Florida.
